Rider Briefing Q&A

Short answers to the questions riders ask most before heading north. Each points to the relevant regional guide for detail.

When is the best season to ride above the Arctic Circle?

June to early September for most routes. July is the warmest and busiest month. Iceland's F-roads usually open from late June or July. Snow can fall on high plateaus such as Sennalandet, the E10 fells and Atigun Pass at either end of the season.

What fuel range do I need?

For the Nordic and Lapland routes, 250 km with a reserve is comfortable. For the Dalton Highway you need to cover about 386 km between Coldfoot and Deadhorse, and on the Dempster about 369 km from Dawson City to Eagle Plains. Add a margin for headwinds and detours. See the route index.

Which route is most suitable for a first Arctic trip?

The E6 to Nordkapp or the E75 through Finnish Lapland. Both are paved with regular services. Leave the Dalton and Dempster until you are comfortable with long gravel days. Read the Nordic guide.

What tyres should I use on the Dalton and Dempster?

Durable dual-sport tyres with plenty of tread. The Dempster's shale is known for cutting tyres, so carry a plug kit and a pump. Studded tyres are only relevant for winter riding, which this site does not cover.

How does the midnight sun affect riding?

Continuous daylight removes the natural cue to stop. Fatigue builds without you noticing. Set a fixed end time for each day, keep regular meals and use an eye mask to sleep. At Nordkapp the sun stays up from roughly mid-May to late July.

How should I deal with reindeer on the road?

Slow down as soon as you see them, expect more to follow, and pass wide and steadily. They are common on the E6, E69 and E75 in summer. Never assume an animal will stay still. See the Lapland guide.

Does Iceland's Route 1 cross the Arctic Circle?

No. Mainland Iceland lies just south of it; only the island of Grímsey is crossed by the Arctic Circle. The riding conditions are still comparable to Arctic routes. See the Iceland guide.

What documents do I need for Nordic border crossings?

Carry your passport or national ID, driving licence, vehicle registration and insurance documents. Norway is not in the EU, so customs rules apply even when there is no visible checkpoint. Check current requirements with the relevant national authorities before travel.

Can the Dempster Highway close in summer?

Yes. Heavy rain, washouts or wildfires can close sections, and the Peel and Mackenzie ferries stop during freeze-up and break-up. Check Yukon 511 and Northwest Territories road reports on the day. See the Dempster section.

Where should I check road conditions?

Use the national authority for each country: Statens vegvesen (Norway), Trafikverket (Sweden), Fintraffic (Finland), umferdin.is (Iceland), Alaska 511 and Yukon 511. Each regional guide lists the links.
